"He must become greater; I must become less."
This really hit home with me this morning. John had a really strong and large following of people before Jesus showed up on the scene. Then when Jesus starts to become active in ministry, John's followers all begin to follow Jesus. I think a lot of people would have reacted in a negative way to this, but not John. John understood his purpose wasn't to get a great crowd of people to follow him, but his job was to point people toward Jesus. If I'm going to effectively point people to Jesus, "he must become greater; I must become less."
God help me make much of Jesus, and to make less of myself.

Dale, we must have been thinking the same thing. I found it more interesting that the word "greater" was used in place of more... You would normally see the word more prior to the word less. when campareing a contrast. But not in this case it seems that it's not just a matter of Jesus being more in our lives but being greater which is defined as "of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above average"

Chris, I like it..."intensity considerably above average"...way too often we settle for an average faith.

A great cut and dry chapter for me. Straight and to the point. To come to the realization and understanding of Jesus Christ enlightens our spirit. For much of my life I didn’t understand just how simple that really was. Makes me really want to lead people to him so that they to can feel the depths of love that await them.

Better late than never.. verse 30 - He (Jesus) must increase but I must decrease. (KJV) This was one of the 1st vrs that really impressed upon me after I rededicated my life to God. My past experiences w/ God were casual at best. So, I knew if I was going to commit my life to Christ I would have to commit my will to his calling; meaning what I thought was important may not be in God's grand plan for my life. This thought provoked a true, deep self-evaluation of my self-pride and lack of humililty, and that I was created to serve God in all I d o really hit home for me. Sure it's struggle for me, but I hold fast to the promise that "Greater is He that is in me than he that is in this world," and I kniw my reward is Heaven, which is greater than anything this wretchen earth could ever offer me.
